The Chief Dental Officer (CDO) is involved in the planning and directing of a program of dental services across the state and the supervision of professional and technical staff in providing dental care and treatment. Work includes surveying needs, planning, promotion and implementation of the statewide dental health program, along with providing dental treatment to inmates. Serves as a liaison between the dental/clinical staff, correctional site operations, corporate and regional offices, and the state correctional and medical leadership. Provides dental evaluation and treatment (including partial and dentures, oral surgery, and dental hygiene services). Care provided can be routine, acute, or emergent. Dental sick call is expected. On-call services are expected.

  • Direct clinical supervision provided by the Corporate Dental Director and Chief Medical Officer
  • Director of Medical &Forensic Services or designee

    • Direct clinical supervision of site dental staff, including staff dentists, dental assistants, and hygienists.


      • Interrelates and works effectively with patients, patient families as appropriate, medical and nursing staff, security staff at all levels, administrative and support staff, consulting physicians, the New Hampshire Department of Corrections, community healthcare providers, WHS legal representation, WHS regional team members and corporate staff as required.


      • Participates in the development of dental/clinical policies and procedures on a state-wide basis.
      • Oversees dental practices in order to ensure and promote quality dental care.
      • Coordinates the services of dentists and any other dental professionals working within all dental facilities in the state.
      • Responsible for resolving problems related to patient safety issues and patient complaints/grievances.
      • Responsible for maintaining utilization management and clinical practice standards through the application of the organization's clinical criteria.
      • Participates in planning activities for the state, including developing, administering, and monitoring operating and capital budgets in conjunction with the Statewide Director of Operations.
      • Solicits dental staff input on new chronic care programs, dental equipment requests, and selection of general dental supplies.
      • Participates in the recruitment of dental staff, including identifying qualified applicants for openings in the dental/clinical staff and interviewing staff when requested.
      • Actively participates in Wexford management meetings/committees, task forces, and state, county, and community agencies/ boards representing the organization.
      • Makes presentations to the professional community in order to enhance the visibility and image of the organization.
      • Ensures that the operation of on-site dental clinics in the state are in compliance with national standards (ACA and NCCHC, as appropriate) and that the scope of care provided is appropriate for the staffing and resources available.
      • Actively participates in Wexford's Corporate Quality Management Committee.
      • Ensures that the dental sites within the state maintain an effective infection control program that includes the prevention, identification, reporting, and control of communicable diseases in accordance with Wexford infection control policies and procedures.
      • Serves as a clinical liaison and resource to all wardens and state/county government officials for dental maters. This includes the attendance at warden and state/county official lead meetings as requested.
      • Assists with legal proceedings as needed.

Must be able to ambulate throughout the facility for extended periods of time. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and distant vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Must be able to clearly communicate orally and via written and typed correspondence and notes using various forms, records, charts, and electronic media.


        Standard office environment and medical setting in a correctional facility, which includes interfacing with inmates, correctional staff, and health care personnel. Temperature extremes may be encountered while moving throughout the facility outdoors and indoors in buildings without air conditioning.


        Substantial travel required



        Current New Hampshire Dentist license required


        Current CPR certification required.


        Graduate of school of dentistry required

        Preferred experience

        3-5 years clinical experience in the practice of dentistry preferred.
        2 years managerial/leadership experience or training in administrative aspects of health care preferred. Correctional healthcare experience preferred.
